About this deal

Looking at the image below, you can see the actual difference between the gen 1 and 2 gimbals. While it doesn’t seem like a lot in the photograph, every millimeter and ounce freed up makes a difference! The big feature that the team could not cover though was the vertical grip add-on. It wasn’t included with our kit so we can’t comment on the usefulness of this feature (yet). That said, let’s dive right into what you get with this gimbal and the features it provides. Just as the the DJI RS 2 is a successor to the Ronin-S, the RSC 2 is a successor to DJI’s Ronin-SC. The updated gimbal is constructed of steel and aluminum, which work to increase rigidity while reducing the overall weight of the unit compared to the Ronin-SC by 35%. It also has a smaller physical footprint with a folded size of 180mm x 190mm (7” x 7.5”) — roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper. Two controllers will be available that can be remotely operated or attached to other gear. Controller is compatible with wireless modules. Compatible with NATO slot, cold shoe mount, 1/4” screws, etc.

New* Time Tunnel: The system performs a 360-degree roll while capturing a hyper-lapse, adding a level of creativity to footage. DJI is really just competing with themselves at this point, there are many other gimbal makers with products out on the market but none of them stand up to the quality and usability that DJI has been giving us. However, while the design looks great, the friction caused by the carbon fibre when trying to adjust the balance just annoyed me, more so than just a niggle. DJI has officially authorized Tilta with the development protocols for all the peripheral interfaces. All products have been carefully tested by the DJI engineering team as well as a series of test/development shoots to improve its design, operation, and durability. The DJI RS 2 is a mixed bag, on the one hand, the technology blasts the previous generation out of the water. It is beautifully designed, and the attention to detail makes you take note.Out of the box, the set up was incredibly straight forward and easy. We tried out the focus motor and it was nice to control it from the scroll wheel. If I would have connected another scroll wheel I could have had one scroll wheel control the motor and the built-in wheel control a setting in the camera. Very useful on long shoots and run & gun moments. The DJI Ronin RS-2 and RSC-2 look rather similar in name, and in design. They offer a lot of the same great features, but the RSC-2 is designed for smaller, mirrorless cameras and costs a lot less, and the RS-2 is a little more pricey but it can handle anything up to an ARRI ALEXA Mini.

Another feature that stands out is that the power grip containing the battery, can be removed and the gimbal can be connected by the RSA/NATO connectors. You’ll want to make sure the balancing step occurs after all your accessories are added. Any time weight is added or removed it’ll effect the balance. DJI’s new RS 2 and RSC 2 are more than just a single-handed gimbal. Improving upon the previous generation on every level, DJI has made their new gimbals more lightweight, intelligent, and with more options. The collaboration between Tilta and DJI has brought RS 2 and RSC 2 to a whole new level. We have worked for months to develop a range of tools for filmmakers looking to get the most out of their gimbal.Doing this freehand generally creates chaos, but mount the Ronin RS 2 in position with RavenEye neatly slotted in place on its mount under the gimbal and you have an incredibly powerful tool. However, in use, you soon get used the layout but would recommend adding an arm to help with the handling. I use the Ronin-S at least once a week, and the additional side grip is the one accessory I couldn’t now do without.

After getting their hands on the RS 2, the first thing they noticed was its smaller size and weight, which made it much easier to keep the stamina up for longer shoots. The SLR team used this gimbal on several shoots that were 4-6 hours a pop, and the reduced weight made it noticeably easier to handle over the course of the day. DJI RS 2 introduces a new feature that allows operators to instantly switch to portrait mode. This is a huge benefit for those working on social media content and other creative applications.

What I Liked about the Ronin RS2

This performance limitation is somewhat disappointing, particularly when compared to its sportier counterpart, the Apache RTR 200 4V, which handles higher speeds more adeptly. Vibrations become noticeable at around 5,500rpm, primarily at the left footpeg and the handlebar, adding to the concern. Adding a touchscreen was incredibly helpful. It means you don’t have to dive into the mobile app to make some of the changes and can more easily make adjustments in the field. It also shows off the current modes and settings, which can be helpful if you have multiple operators for the same gimbal as there were only LED lights available. A new 1.4” color touchscreen on the rear of the RS 2 serves as a way to cycle through settings, camera data or even a live feed from the camera. Two onboard RSA ports can double as NATO ports, enabling the RS 2 to be used in conjunction with other DJI and third-party accessories, including jibs, car attachments, sliders, grips and remote controllers. DJI RSC 2 DJI introduced the Titan Stabilization Algorithm for exceptionally smooth footage on DJI RS 2, and this is a significant improvement compared to DJI Ronin-S. A new gimbal feature that DJI Ronin-S does not support is SuperSmooth, which can be activated for an professional level of smoothness. This feature compensates for micromovements and increases torque to stabilize even 100mm zoom lenses. This means if you are shooting on the move with the camera in different positions, your footage will always stay sharp. Another big change is the addition of professional RSA/NATO ports that enable the new RS 2 to be incorporated into larger, more complex rigs or control systems.
