About this deal

A dram of real quality and sophistication. Young Glengoyne is often wonderfully malty, whilst older versions are sherry dominated. The 12 year old is where we start to see the sherry exert itself. It isn’t in command yet but it’s flexing its muscles so to speak. Very well balanced and great value for money. Glengoyne 12 is crafted using Golden Promise barley, a flavorful early-maturing spring barley that was once popular but fell out of favor due to cost and lower yield. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. It is an excellent choice for whisky enthusiasts who prefer the pure, unadulterated flavors of a smoke-free expression. Is it chill-filtered? My first visit to Glengoyne distillery came in the latter half of 2014 during a session of John Lamond‘s fantastic Whisky Certificate Course. This eight week long night class covered the entirety of the whisky-making process and gave a detailed history of the industry, from its beginnings with Friar John Cor to the growth of the blending giants and the modern explosion of single malts. Towards the culmination of the course there was a class outing to a local distillery and since we were based in Glasgow, this gave only two realistic options: Auchentoshan and Glengoyne. We sampled this bottle on the 14th of November 2012. Although it was harsh at first and had very divided opinions, it is actually a very pleasant dram. As with all cask strength whiskies, it improves with a dash of water. Palate: Very strong oak, can definitely taste the barrel. Tingles the tongue. But very sweet, apples and apricots. Water actually brings out more oak, but other citrus flavours which help to soften it. Honey and treacle. With hints of pepper and spice. Almonds. This time-tested method of drinking whisky has been embraced by the Scots and is recommended to enhance your whisky-drinking experience. Alcohol content

With Water: Water fails to wake up the nose, and does nothing interesting for the palate. I’d skip the water. Nose: Hot. Faint elements of sherry – mildly nutty and fruity. Shy – I can’t determine much from the nose. After a rest in the glass, there’s a bit of caramel. Bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) which is a bit above the minimum required by the laws that govern Scotch Whisky. Does it expire? On the nose: rush of apples, the distillery’s trademark character. All shades of it too, from dry cider to russet. Peaches and apricots. Then digestive biscuits, or rather malted milks. Floral honey. Very fresh and clean.

These experiences have honed my palate and provided me with a profound understanding of the vast world of spirits. However, it is recommended to consume the remaining 25% of the bottle sooner rather than later, as the flavor may start to deteriorate over time. Glengoyne 12: Specs Type of Whisky Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. Glengoyne’s marketing is very adamant that the whisky has absolutely no peat character at all, either from the process water or from the barley, which is unusual at zero ppm (even traditionally unpeated Highlanders like Glenlivet have around 2 ppm). The distillery has a right to market its insistence on showcasing the barley, as it is one of two remaining producers that use Golden Promise barley. The other is The Macallan. Golden Promise is considered to be of higher quality, but much more expensive to grow than high-yield commercial strains. The distillery uses a mix of first-fill sherry, refill sherry, and ex-bourbon casks, although its whisky is immediately recognizable as a sherried Highland-style whisky. The 12-year, now bottled at 43% ABV, also uses some first-fill Hogshead ex-bourbon barrels – a first for Glengoyne. All Glengoyne has natural color, but this bottling (and all other Glengoyne, except the cask-strength version) is chill-filtered.

In the mouth: clean, fresh, hoppy almost, but then definitely into shades of mead, apples (stewed and green), cider. Plenty of cereal character as well, with an Aultmore-like grassiness to boot. The texture, though, is lovely. Nice and viscous, chewy. Just lovely to sit in the mouth. Digestive biscuits. This is not the most overly complex dram in the world, but it is exceptionally well executed for the price. Conclusions Glengoyne 12 stands out among renowned 12-year-old malts like Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, and holds its own alongside the benchmark Macallan Double Cask 12.

This was the dram that was used to welcome visitors at the distillery on the Malt Master tour, just as we settled in for the introduction. My wife was the driver for the day, as I was mixing whisky, so we decanted that into a little sample bottle for me to try at home. Though I enjoyed it on the day, I’m glad I did have the chance to analyse it at home because it turned out to be a very nice whisky indeed.
