In contrast to But I'm a Cheerleader, this movie tells the story of gay conversion therapy camps as it really is: sad and infuriating. With all of its shock and horror moments, Yellowjackets manages to remain intricate and deep in its storytelling, building layer upon layer of insight and intrigue into the lives of the women and girls it is portraying.
The acting is quite good and it's definitely one of the more realistic (and positive) portrayals of this sort of relationship. There’s a bit of representation in older generations, but I think for the teens who are watching it who identify with these characters, they will be able to feel comfort and hopefully acceptance at the end of the show. It has its moments and is worth a watch even though it's not as colorful or fast-paced as some of the other movies on this list. It's a little dark, dramatic, and rough around the edges, but there is a warmness to it that shines through to the very final scene. Kate Messner, who is the daughter of Principal Mr Messner, is befriended by lovestruck Luke O’Neil (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), who asks her to be his girlfriend.Actually, I get the feeling that this could be the analogue of Snakes on a Plane, except lesbians are the snakes?
