About this deal

Betrayal is the new release from Lesley Pearse where she introduces us to Eve who has been the victim of domestic abuse and it doesn’t stop at her because Don has raised his hand to their son now too. This makes some of the most brutal and most tender scenes all the more impactful and I think some readers will be profoundly affected by the quality of the writing. Eve is to be admired for having the strength to do the right thing and soon herself and the children are placed in a women's refuge run by Marianne. Story line was sound and I enjoyed watching Eve and her children develop once they were safe again and had control of their lives. But life with Don is not an easy or happy one and Eve lives in constant fear of what he may do next.

I had a terrible day at work and when you began nagging me about decorating the lounge, I just saw red. But honestly, it all just felt a little repetitive and that there was nothing exciting or intriguing happening. Beautifully written from start to finish and never one to shy away from uneasy topics, Betrayal covers some difficult subjects with this author's trademark skill of empathy, sensitivity and cracking good story telling. With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. In the same way that you cannot equivocate male/female domestic violence with male/male or female/male, each case needs to be recognised and supported with absolute trust. This book didn’t disappoint me either, I do love how how this author has brought her stories and plots upto modern age. Lesley has a reputation for writing gritty, confronting stories that don’t shy away from distressing issues. I won't say I loved the topic, or the situations some of the characters found themselves in, but I loved how it was written and found myself unable to put it down.

Just be warned though — it deals with domestic abuse and grooming which may be triggering for some readers. But then the last quarter or so of the book, things really picked up and god did the book veer off in a direction that I hadn’t seen coming but really looking back on it the clues were there for the reader to see if they had looked hard enough. Lesley now lives in Torquay, Devon where she loves to spend time walking on the beach with her grandchildren. The plot moves along at a cracking pace and events have a disturbing ring of truth for so many women’s lives in them. I certainly found myself questioning my morals with this book because I am very much one who believes in doing the right thing and without giving too much away Eve does something unforgivable that would usually have me turning against a character however because we have seen what poor Eve has had to endure through her life there was a part of me that excused her for her actions.
