About this deal

Like if they were to do a remake collection of uncharted 1-3 would be separated like mgs and ff pixel remaster. It honestly feels like a massive kick in the nuts that no effort was made to update the controls OR up the frame rate to 60+. also, since we are evaluating this collection in 2023 and 12 years have gone by since the original mgs hd collection on ps3, people have the right to be more critical of this package. It would be like a 3D mario collection including the original Super Mario Bros 1-3 as bonus Content and it being glossed over. We get the PS1 classic MGS, with the VR missions pack included, we get MGS2: Sons of Liberty and MGS3: Snake Eater, with enhancements from the later Substance and Subsistence versions.

I'm mostly referring to the fact I'd prefer that the collection of games were accessible within the one menu like most collections are. Sorry couldn't resist framing as a loaded question after the Spider-man length debate, and games artificially extending their length to the point of insanity. This collection includes the classic versions of the games, complete with minimal edits to copyrighted contents. There are no extra bells or whistles to be found in the new Master Collection; the three games are as they were either 25 years ago or following the PS3 remasters from Bluepoint Games — save for a small resolution bump. The one upside is that the dithering of the PS1 original is removed for this release, giving us a cleaner image.

Ainu20 I would not care about how a game is packaged, digitally or otherwise, so long as the game itself is good. The original Metal Gear Solid in the Master Collection plays it very safe, with no differences playing it between PS5, Series X, Switch or PC due to a straight emulation approach handled by developer M2. It's fine for jumping in and out of one specific title, but you've got to play a guessing game to locate the extra content. In booting either of these games, you'll even catch a flash of the old HD Collection logo in the bottom right. for mgs 1, you can get a FAR better experience simply running the game in an emulator — widscreen, better framerate and resolution included.

We can't speak to how the Master Collection is handled on other consoles or PC, but on PS5, nothing feels cohesive. For Switch and its Tegra X1 chipset, there's clearly a bottleneck to getting either game running at 60fps, but the problems don't end there.

For starters, it probably no longer even exists so that would mean adding a considerable amount of new code. The original 1998 Metal Gear Solid plays via emulation in the Master Collection release, with the same 240p resolution and 30fps cap. Bit of a strange choice with the individual launcher thing but other than that it sounds exactly how I wanted it. And once again Switch loses out in this aspect, with zero texture filtering applied to any surface - causing pixellated noise across busy textures. It feels like a release put together with a pritt stick rather than super glue, with content spilling out into other apps when really it could have all been housed under one roof. So not sure if I've missed something here, but we've got a couple of PS3 games running natively now on PS5? This 30fps cap on Switch has a domino effect on the game's motion blur effect, too, causing more notable banding behind camera movement. It's a breath of fresh air seeing Metal Gear Solid 3's busy forest areas sharpen up with nine times the pixel output of the default 720p setup. It's worth stressing that the best way to play this is in selecting the English US version from the menus, which gets you a higher max frame-rate than the default English UK option.

Both MGS2 and 3 run at the same fixed 720p resolution on PC, with no graphics menu to boost the resolution - though there are user workarounds. Check out the comparison shots a little higher in this piece to see the difference - it's quite stark.

I'm glad to say this blur effect is at least removed for the Raiden section later on though, and in MGS3. However anti-aliasing and texture filtering are missing in MGS2 on Switch - and are lacking on Series X as well. This simply requires copying a few files to each game's install directory, amd then editing the provided . Still it begs the question: how far off the mark is Switch from hitting 60fps on a game that's fundamentally over 20 years old?
