About this deal

And though he at times expresses regret for the sacrifices this entails—he is especially vexed by the toll it takes on his love-life—he never discusses art with even a touch of bitterness. The letters can be read as an autobiography of an artist; time spent in Brabant, Paris and London, The Hague, Drenthe, Nuenen, Antwerp, Arles, Saint-Remy and Auvers chronicle his corporal travels as well as his artistic growth.

chọn chủ đề trong tranh là đồng quê, và nhiều lần đề cập trong những bức thư việc yêu thích cuộc sống, con người và thiên nhiên ở vùng nông thôn. By contrast, Vincent infrequently kept letters sent to him and just 84 have survived, of which 39 were from Theo. Anyway, the letters are divided into two sections – those when Vincent was a priest and missionary, and those where he was an artist (though this is my division). Vincent van Gogh was born to upper middle class parents and spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers before travelling to The Hague, London and Paris, after which he taught in England at Isleworth and Ramsgate. Here we can observe Van Gogh's thoughts and opinions at first hand, as well as his close ties with his brother Theo, his sometimes troubled relationships with friends and fellow artists, his personal doubts and fears, and above all his overriding passion for his art. The letters in this superb selection help account for this massive and lasting outpouring of affection.

Hugo, and there is also something of Rembrandt in the Gospel or, if you prefer, something of the Gospel in Rembrandt, it comes to much the same thing if you understand it properly, do not try to distort it. This selection of letters is a perfect antidote to the alienating effect of ubiquitous reproduced images. However, sometimes I wonder what might has been, because by the end of his life, his skill as an artist was starting to become known among the critics.Van Gogh then began to alternate between fits of madness and lucidity and was sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy for treatment. Most of all, however, these letters are immensely valuable for they give a good insight into the artistic view of the painter. In the last days of December 1901, running through January 1902, Bruno Cassirer and his cousin Paul Cassirer organized the first van Gogh exhibition in Berlin, Germany. Stopniowo, prośby i problemy finansowe przewijające się przez całą, ponad 10-letnią korespondencję między braćmi, zaczynają ustępować miejsca spowiedzi bezpośredniej, nagiej, reanimującej dozgonne (dosłownie) zaufanie, jakie van Gogh pokładał w malarstwie.

Looking around the house, I see his artworks are certainly prominently represented: I have an umbrella, shoes, T-shirt, and sweatshirt with Van Gogh's paintings. Like with Field with Irises near Arles: he wrote the colours ‘blue’, ‘grey-green’, ‘yellow’ and ‘purple’ on the sketch. It's a story of a man driven by internal conviction, who gets knocked down time and time again but gets up, no matter how hard it is, until he can get up no more. But in all of these letters, even before he decided to take up art—which he did comparatively late, at the age of 27—Van Gogh show a keen visual awareness and appreciation. I know when I started on GR I didn’t always review my book selections because I was trying to list hundreds of volumes (and I still forgot to list many I’d read).
