August or September in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, to get a very early crop at the start of the following year. Mix with olive oil and Egyptian Dukkahand roast in the oven (the option we took in our Dukkah Roasted Vegetables with Spicy Couscous). Arrange the broccoli into two equal piles. Set one pile to one side, then finely chop the stems and florets of the other pile and put them in a large bowl. Add the flour, polenta, nutritional yeast, paprika, chilli flakes, baking powder, bicarb and salt, and stir well to combine. Stir in the flax seeds, yoghurt, milk and oil, and mix into a batter.

This is a vegan adaptation of a recipe I wrote (and loved) for Tenderstem. You’ll need a 23cm cake tin. Add a drizzle of your favourite oil (use sesame oil for an Asian-style side dish) and stir fry for 4-5 minutes on high heat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and red chilli flakes, and serve! Our Unique Structure: Because we have no shareholders. the main aim of the company is not to make huge profits, but instead to supply great seeds to home gardeners at reasonable prices, and to educate people about home seed-saving. We would really like to encourage you to have a go at saving seed from brassica family - that's the cabbages, kales, oriental vegetables, broccoli and turnip family. We know many of you save obvious ones like tomato and lettuce seed, but we've noticed that in the past people shied away from doing the biennial vegetables (plants that flower in their second year). You can recognise clubroot damage as swollen roots with 'finger and thumb'-like projections are the typical signs. The plants wilt, appear stunted and go grey/blue as their roots are destroyed. They typically recover from the wilting at night. Infected roots soon rot into a foul-smelling mass, discharging spores into the soil.Broccoli is part of the cabbage family, it’s a large plant in vegetable terms. The different varieties have stunning form and colourful, edible foliage. Once you have your broccoli seeds up and running a long harvest is guaranteed. A great edible for winter, keeping soil occupied and active and tastes incredible fresh off the plant. Suttons have all types of Broccoli varieties, from all year round purple sprouting, continuity mixes and seeds such as ‘Rudolph’ which is ideal for Freezing. Why not try some exotic Broccoli such as Chinese ‘Wok Broccoli’. For maximum nutrients steam cook Broccoli. Growing Broccoli from seed It's a good idea to put netting over Broccoli to protect against the pigeons. This will also protect against hungry Caterpillars. It’s worth growing plants on until they are at 4 to 6 leaves as this will deter snails and slugs. Set traps for them if sown open ground. The maggots are usually too deep in the soil or inside plants for the insecticide to get at them. Earthing up affected older plants will sometimes let them root above the damaged areas, and may save the plants. Giving affected plants plenty of water with some liquid feed may also help overcome the damage. This is one of the very few greens that keep a great texture when cooked, with a very slight crunch to them. They're not in any way chewy - but they just don't go completely soft the way that for example spinach does. Steam. It only takes about 4 minutes to cook in a colander placed above a simmering saucepan of water and covered with a lid ( a steam pan). Simply sprinkle some sea salt on top and serve. Cabbage moths are on the wing at night during May and June, laying batches of round eggs on the leaf undersides that will hatch after two weeks. The caterpillars feed for at least a month before they mature. They pupate in the soil and generally hatch the following spring. But a few will hatch in late summer and into the autumn. They can be found in early winter if it’s mild. The chrysalids of the second generation hatch in the spring. Broccoli can be sown late winter to early spring or even autumn sowing, giving you the opportunity for a near-constant supply of this healthy veg

Wet and acid soil are the favoured conditions of clubroot. Improving drainage will help. Making raised beds is a good way of doing this. Use treated boards, for example, to make beds 1-1.5m wide and at least 15cm higher than surrounding soil. Acid soils can be made more alkaline and much less prone to clubroot infection by the addition of lime or chalk. Lime is cheap, so this is the most economic way to keep down clubroot. Cabbage root fly More people are saving brassica seed now - and we'd like to encourage you to try it too: its incredibly easy, and you get so much seed, you'll have loads to give away. There's really no need for example to buy Kale seed from us every year at all. You just set aside a patch of good kale plants, and let them flower, making sure that you've got a reasonable number, that they are healthy, and that no other sorts are flowering nearby that might cross with them. You'll get lots of seeds in August.

Start your seeds in small pots in a greenhouse or propagator, with a decent peat-free compost. Sieve over the broccoli seedlings to give them a really strong start. Can be sown in drills in open ground when the soil warms up. A hybrid of Chinese kale and standard broccoli is referred to by various names in different parts of the world. In the UK, it is most widely known as Tenderstem Broccoli (which is a trademarked name), whilst in the US and other countries, it is called Baby Broccoli or Broccolini. It is long-stem broccoli that has edible leaves, flower shoots and tender stems, and is a perfect no-waste vegetable. Flavour-wise, it is similar to regular broccoli itself, with slightly sweeter notes and a softer texture. Low in calories and high in Vitamin C, it is certainly a healthy and nutritious vegetable to use in your cooking. How To Cook Tenderstem Broccoli? Our Seed Club: Due to ridiculous seed laws here in the UK, many of our fantastic vegetable seeds cannot in theory be supplied to the public, because they are not on the UK National List of permitted vegetable varieties1 But we do supply them to members of our seed club. We absolutely love the combination of lemon, garlic and chilli to go with broccoli (all ingredients and full method in the recipe card below), but there are other flavours that go very well. Roast. Large whites emerge in the spring and seek out cabbage plants, laying as many as 200 eggs in clumps beneath the leaves. Two weeks later, the eggs hatch and caterpillars emerge. They feed in a colony at first then disperse, but not far, so if you find one, you will find others. Once fully grown, they pupate away from plants, soon hatching into butterflies. The second generation in July and August are numerous and very damaging. com.growinginteractive.gardenplanner.GardenPlannerRelatedContent.GetArticleRelatedContent(Int32 articleID, String articleTags, String relatedArticleIDs, Int16 clientID, Int32 userID, String countryCode, Int32 maxNoOfItemsToReturn) +1201 Broccoli seeds prefer to be sown and planted in a sunny position, in rich and firm soil, but not in soil that has recently been manured. The small white is similar, emerging a little earlier in the spring, laying eggs and producing caterpillars that feed singly. The chrysalids form on the plants. There is also a second generation of small whites, which cause damage into the autumn. The second generation of both types will not hatch until spring. Caterpillars strip foliage, tunnel into the hearts of cabbages and spoil produce with their droppings or frass. There are two cabbage-white butterflies that do serious damage: the large white and the small white. Damage is also caused by moth caterpillars.
