I’d never said such a thing to him in my life, and I sort of wanted him to come in and give me a slap. Or a hug. Something, anyway. Instead I heard him shuffle into the kitchen, where the bottle of Gilbey’s would be waiting. When it comes to the ending, it really delivered after such a climactic buildup. I had no idea what would transpire but when it did, my goodness, it was wonderful and wrapped up an unforgettable novel. It was simply a perfect way to end things that left me beyond satisfied. Read The Gunslinger, the first book in King’s Dark Tower series. Discuss the world-building parallels between both books. Ambitious, pure, and powerful… One of King's grandest narrative statements, and another must-read book from a master.”

An enthralling, adventurous read that will, like any genuine fairy tale, scare you half to death and lift up your heart… A splendid work of world-building.” I thought, I don’t want to be a Disney prince. To hell with that. If I have to be a prince, I want to be a dark one.Stephen King has said that Fairy Tale was prompted by a question he asked himself early in the pandemic: “What could you write that would make you happy?” And the answer to that question turned out to be a story about a young man who loves an old dog so much that he’s willing to travel through a portal to another, perilous world for a chance at saving the dog’s life. Fairy Tale is a dark fantasy novel by American author Stephen King, published on September 6, 2022, by Scribner. [1] [2] The novel follows Charlie Reade, a 17-year-old who inherits keys to a hidden, otherworldly realm, and finds himself leading the battle between forces of good and evil. [3] Plot [ edit ] I feel this is going to be more of an expulsion of emotions I went through while reading Fairy Tale than a standard review. But before I start…

At one point in the novel, Charlie Reade is in a course called America Today and his teacher, Mr. Masensik, asked Charlie for his opinion concerning the shootings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. Both of those shootings occurred in 2016 and the novel is set in April 2013 to February 2014, so those shootings would not have occurred yet. I thought I didn’t know what to say, but words came out of my mouth anyway. “Because of your drinking.” He got a part-time job at the Jiffy Car Wash out by the turnpike extension. That lasted a week, then he either quit or got fired. He didn’t tell me which and I didn’t ask. I remember the reception after the funeral. It was at our house. My father was there, greeting people and accepting condolences, and then he was gone. I asked his brother, my Uncle Bob, where he was. “He had to lie down,” Uncle Bob said. “He was really worn out, Charlie. Why don’t you go outside and play?”

Customer reviews

First, he chose to write the entire book in first person but in the reminiscent voice. I’m a huge proponent of the Fictive Dream. I love being dropped into the story and having my real world disappear and time turn elastic. When I finally pull my head out of the book to look up four hours has slipped away. And it feels like only twenty minutes. With the reminiscent voice King held me at arms-length from the story and even went as far as bursting the “forth wall,” when he stopped the story and the main character (author/story teller) gives us information. I don’t like it in movies and I don’t care for it the stories I read. I prefer the active voice where the author sets the scene, drops me in and I stay there living the events along the main character. The reminiscent voice is “telling,” the story as if I’m in a bar with King and he’s relating what happened to him. Most authors would have a difficult time pulling this off, but King is a master craftsman and still held my attention throughout, (for several reasons I’ll elaborate on later). In addition, the choice of the reminiscent voice gives up a great deal of tension and suspense because we know the hero is going to make it through, (and he keeps reminding us that he makes it through the ordeal by bursting the forth wall). Otherwise, I wouldn’t be sitting at the bar with him telling me the story. Still looking at the swordfight and hardly slurring at all, he said: “I seem to have lost my job, Charlie. Or, if I can quote Bobcat Goldthwait, I know where it is, but someone else is doing it. Or soon will be.” I try not to. And mostly I can do that unless I wake up at two in the morning with nobody in the bed but me. Then I blame him.”

We were never a churchgoing family, or religious at all in any conventional sense. Once I asked my mom why we didn’t go to church—was it because she didn’t believe in God? She told me that she did, but she didn’t need a minister (or a priest, or a rabbi) to tell her how to believe in Him. She said she only needed to open her eyes and look around to do that. Dad said he was brought up a Baptist but quit going when his church got more interested in politics than the Sermon on the Mount. I said it's unlike his usual style because we all know his speciality is horror, he gave us some of the most iconic horror characters and stories ever. However, this book, Fairy Tale, is constructed to be a fantastic journey in the sacred pace of a traditional fairy tale.

A story as old as myth, and as startling and iconic as the rest of King’s work, Fairy Tale is about an ordinary guy forced into the hero’s role by circumstance. This reading group guide for Fairy Tale includes an introduction, discussion questions, and ideas for enhancing your book club. The suggested questions are intended to help your reading group find new and interesting angles and topics for your discussion. We hope that these ideas will enrich your conversation and increase your enjoyment of the book. Your friend Andy isn’t the only kid he’s yelled at,” Dad said. “Bowditch is famous for his foul temper and his equally foul-tempered German Shepherd. The town council would love for him to die so they can tear that place down, but so far he’s hanging in there. I speak to him when I see him—which is rarely—and he seems civil enough, but I’m an adult. Some elderly guys have an allergy to kids. Steer clear of him would be my advice, Charlie.”For me this book, in a way, is an enigma. I loved it for the main reasons I love most of King’s works and at the same time there are things I wish he would’ve done different. Not quite a love-hate, but a love…ah—disappointed maybe. It's the perfect recipe to make you bawl your eyes out. And I did cry about five times for the first half of this book. Charlie's a teenager struggling with grief and guilt. He made a bargain with God, and now it seems that God is calling in the debt and Charlie is more than happy to settle. In my humble opinion, (and I say this without having yet read Billy Summers or Sleeping Beauties), I think FAIRY TALE stands right up there with King's best. It's, perhaps, King's best work in years.
