We experiment with both the amplifier’s phono stage and its headphone output and we’re pleased to report the sound stays consistent with the same bold character traits shining through. It’s easy for a manufacturer to take its eye off the ball here, but credit to Cambridge Audio for making sure there’s no sacrifice.

Isolate one of the ground paths with an isolation transformer, common mode choke, optical coupler, balanced circuitry, or frequency selective grounding. IMPORTANT: Presets are stored separately for each waveband, meaning that there are 15 preset slots available for FM stations, and 15 preset slots available for AM stations. It is possible to change the tuner region settings for this unit. This can be necessary if the unit has been moved to a different country. Two settings are possible which set the correct de-emphasis and tuning steps for either North America or Europe/Rest of the world. Like a Noah’s Ark of hi-fi, the AX range goes in two-by-two with the AXC25 and AXC35 CD players; AXA25 and AXA35 integrated amplifiers and AXR85 and AXR100 stereo receivers. The range takes design cues from the CX and Edge to deliver on Cambridge’s ambition of producing what it has dubbed as “Great British Sound”. The range intends to reflect the intention of the artists without taking anything away from the performance.

The sound characteristics are of course described by the manufacturer in the tried and tested manner as rather neutral, but with a certain independence, the “Great British Sound”, which is understood as the most important trademark.

At the heart of the new Cambridge Audio AXR100D is a stereo integrated amplifier, which should have sufficient power reserves to operate even stand-alone speaker systems, in any case fine compact bookshelf speaker systems, effortlessly. Two times 100 Watts are available here at loudspeaker systems with an impedance of 8 Ohm. A typical living room is thus easily provided with adequate sound, and should even more bass be desired, an additional subwoofer can of course be controlled via a corresponding pre-amplifier output.
