Maalox plus tablets contain glucose, sucrose and sorbitol and should not be taken by people with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency. How can this medicine affect other medicines? The other medicine is called simethicone. It belongs to a group of medicines called anti-foaming agents. Adults should chew one to two tablets four times a day, 20 minutes to one hour after meals and at bedtime, as needed to relieve symptoms. Tell all of your health care providers that you take Maalox (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide suspension). This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately. Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide are both medicines called antacids. They are used to reduce the acidity of the stomach's juices. You have red and lumpy skin rash, swollen eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing. This could be signs of an allergic reaction. Although Maalox Antacid Suspension only treats indigestion, heartburn and wind, there are other antacids that can treat other symptoms. These can include stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining. If you are taking the chewable tablets, chew thoroughly before swallowing, then drink a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters).

Antacids such as aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide can reduce the absorption of many other medicines from the gut, which may make the other medicines less effective. If you are taking any other medicines, get advice from your pharmacist before taking this antacid. Antacids should preferably not be taken at the same time of day as any other medicines. In general, any interactions can be avoided if you do not take this antacid in the two hours before and after taking any other medicine. Some foods may make your symptoms worse. Foods and drinks that have been suspected of this include peppermint, tomatoes, chocolate, spicy foods, hot drinks, coffee, and alcoholic drinks. If it seems that a food is aggravating your symptoms, try avoiding it for a while to see if your symptoms improve. Also, try avoiding eating large meals, as these can make your symptoms worse too.

Concomitant use of aluminium products with quinidines may increase the serum levels of quinidine and lead to quinidine overdosage. Aluminium hydroxide may cause constipation and magnesium salts overdose may cause hypomotility of the bowel; large doses of this product may trigger or aggravate intestinal obstruction and ileus in patients at higher risk such as those with renal impairment, or the elderly. Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over should take one to two 5ml spoonfuls four times a day, 20 minutes to one hour after meals and at bedtime, as needed to relieve symptoms.
