Although the books are designed to entertain young children, they are not intended as "early readers", as are, for example, the " Cat in the Hat" books by Dr. Seuss which have a very basic and largely phonic vocabulary. The Hairy Maclary books, despite their simple stories, introduce the listening child to some long but very expressive words, which are not part of the average preschooler vocabulary but must be understood by the child in the context in which they occur. When Slinky and Syd hear noises, the reader expects that invisible authority figure is about to return. The characters are about to get into trouble. But no! It’s the dog gang, introduced in Lynley Dodd’s first book of the series: Hairy Maclary and his friends. Readers familiar with previous books in the series (almost every young New Zealander) will know what comes next: The dogs are here to join in the fun. In some carnivalesque plots, the authority figure (an adult, in kids’ books) is there at the beginning. Hairy Maclary, Sit by the same author is a good example of that. There never was any adult in this one, but there is always an implied adult. (‘Alone’ in the house.) At any moment, that implied adult might come home to find the place in tatters. Appearance of an Ally in FunMalinki is based on Dodd's cat, Wooskit, who was with her for 13 years. Slinky Malinki is very silly. Regardless, if you're looking for children's books with cats as the main characters, Slinky Malinki is a fun series to explore. The illustrations are fun and colorful and the story is told in a poetic meter. The vocabulary in this tale of Slinky Malinki's adventures at home with the family bird, is much simpler than that in Slinky Malinki, Cat Flaps.
