About this deal

WHERE THE WORLD TURNS WILD is a journey between extremes of grey and green, propelled by a bold and timely concept, and written with sharp, intelligent prose. A truly heartfelt and very striking novel." – Darren Simpson, author of SCAVENGERS When scientists discover that the siblings provide the key to fighting the disease, the pair must flee for their lives. As they journey into the unknown, they soon learn that there's cruelty in nature as well as beauty. Will they ever find the home they're searching for? Where the World Turns Wild is a beautiful, enchanting novel which tells the tale of siblings Jupiter and Bear and their search to reconnect to their parents. The novel is set in a world where a disease has wiped out a large proportion of the population, and those surviving are forced to live in a sterile world where nature and the wilderness is forbidden. My heart attached itself to Ghost from the first time I saw them. I’d love to tell you all about Ghost but don’t want to ruin anything for you. Keep a piece of your heart reserved for them though. They deserve it.

Juniper and Bear’s relationship is at the heart of this story. Juniper feels responsible for her little brother and tries to care for him as best she can. Then one day they are forced to leave the city and return to the Wild. But not all wild is good or safe. Juniper and Bear have to face the Wild and take it head on. I am in awe. This book was the most incredible journey, filled with deep feelings of love and hate, and what it means to truly be ‘wild’. When scientists discover that the siblings provide the key to fighting the disease, the pair must flee for their lives. As they journey into the unknown, they soon learn that there's cruelty in nature as well as beauty. Will they ever find the home they’re searching for? When scientists discover that the siblings’ blood holds the secret to surviving in the outdoors, their lives are endangered. They are left with no choice but to run. They set out for Ennerdale, the half-remembered home of their infancy. It is extraordinary! This compelling book has future classic written all over it!"" – Lindsay Galvin, author of THE SECRET DEEP

Where the World Turns Wild was shortlisted for the first Joan Aiken Future Classics Prize in 2017. It was also selected for SCBWI's 2018 Undiscovered Voices anthology. Juniper and Bear's relationship is at the heart of this story. Juniper feels responsible for her little brother and tries to care for him as best she can. Then one day they are forced to leave the city and return to the Wild. But not all wild is good or safe. Juniper and Bear have to face the Wild and take it head on. I loved the importance of names in this book. Because Juniper’s name related to the Wild and this was a serious no no in this highly controlled environment, she was called June instead when she was at school. The name of the city’s leader was well suited to their description. Although I didn’t even wonder about its name in the beginning, when I finally learned the origin of the name of the valley where Juniper and Bear were born it had such a lovely symmetry to it. I’m going to pay much more attention to the names of people and places during my inevitable reread. I've got a very special guest post by author Nicola Penfold, that I'll be sharing here. It's an excellent piece about journeys in literature, and I definitely recommend reading it. To keep things straightforward, I'm sharing my own review of Nicola's book in this post. A beautiful book with an important message about our world and what could happen to it if we don't make a stand and do something to protect the wild around us.

Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap... I fell in love with this story and with Juniper and Bear, and hope this isn't the end of experiencing their Wild with them. Juniper’s and Bear’s parents live outside, beyond the insecticide sprayed, curfew closed, surveillance overwhelmed, City enclosure. Somehow, the pair must escape their confine, with smuggled provisions, and survive the insurmountable odds of a 300 mile journey to Ennerdale. They don’t recall their parents, for their grandmother has raised them. However, through illegal books about nature and the world outside, they’ve a sense of the possibilities they’ll encounter. In addition, they know of the dangers from Portia Steel’s drones, to wolves and traps. What else will they need to overcome?
